Thoughts On Day 3 of the 2012 NFL Draft

  • The San Francisco 49ers clearly had a goal of becoming more explosive through the draft.  After selecting vertical wide receiver A.J. Jenkins in the first round, the Niners picked a homerun hitter in   running back LaMichael James in the second round.  Neither player has a clear path to the starting lineup, but both provide value on special teams and in offensive sub-packages.
  • Two or three years from now, one of the themes of the 2012 NFL draft will be the debate about the second tier quarterbacks.  Signal callers Brock Osweiler, Nick Foles and Russell Wilson were all selected on day two.  Former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins will probably be picked early in the fourth round.  There is hardly a consensus on who is the best player out of these four players and their development will be an interesting storyline going forward.
  • Expect a run on tailbacks in the fourth round with Lamar Miller, Chris Polk and Chris Rainey being the top players available at the position.
  • Potential day three steals:  WRs Tommy Streeter and BJ Conningham, TE Orson Charles,  and OT Bobby Massie.

  1. What about Matt Flynn though? He got a pretty lucrative deal if he’s gonna sit the bench. Wilson is great though, I despised him at NC St. as a Carolina fan, but I thought he had a chance to win a championship at Wisconsin.
